Hiking
Some of the best hiking trails in Alaska are located around the beautiful city of Valdez on the coast of Prince William Sound. The harbor, surrounded by mountains, is the center of the city. The easiest trail is the Dock Point Trail, a one mile long trail which is located at the east end of the harbor. The trail is popular among those who like berries, flowers and trees, and it offers beautiful views across Valdez Bay. Hikers who wish little more adventure can try the Keystone Canyon Pack Trail, which goes from the Old Richardson Highway Loop at approximately 12 mile to Bridal Veil Falls. The trail is 2.6 miles, and offers good views of Lowe River Valley, and also fantastic views across Keystone Canyon. Another popular hiking trail is the Goat Trail & Wagon Road, which begins at Bridal Veil Falls and goes to Mile 18 Richardson Highway. This historic trail offers excellent views of Bear Creek, Duck Flats, Lowe River, and Snowslide Gulch. Yet another trail with spectacular views is located in the Mineral Creek Valley. The 6-mile Mineral Creek Gravel Road begins approximately 3/4 miles from the water tower on Mineral Creek Drive. The road goes up through a mountain canyon, and there is waterfalls on both sides of the road. About halfway up the road, it's posible to choose a road which goes to McIntosh Road House Ruins. The main road continues up along the Mineral Creek. At the end of the main road is an easy 2-mile trail. The trail ends at an old stamp mill, which was built by W.L. Smith during 1913. At the top of Thompson Pass, about 30 miles north of Valdez, lies the Worthington Glacier State Recreation Site, which features a short 1-mile trail along the edge of the Worthington Glacier. The trail offers close-up views of Alaskan wildflowers, and a great view of the glacier which covers an area of about 5 square miles.
